The drab brown larvae can reach lengths close to that of a human finger and have mandibles with impressive bite strength (I have the scars to prove it!).

Tailwaters below dams are often perfect scud habitat where they thrive in shallow, stable flows with abundance of aquatic vegetation. During winter, freshwater shrimp-like crustaceans, or scuds, are a significant food source in the tailwaters when other food sources are not readily available.

What associations come to your mind when you think about salmonflies (Pteronarcys sp.)? If you’re like me, thoughts of warming weather, the transition from spring into summer, big salmon-colored insects clumsily flying in the air, and big trout splashing the surface are front of mind.

The river is alive with caddis in the air skating, jerking, and bouncing of the water surface. The river boils with a feeding frenzy of many trout snouts seen breaking the water surface eager for the feast.

The first massive red that chased my fly came up, opened its large mouth and closed on it in what seemed like slow motion to me!  In my excitement, once I saw it take the fly and submerged slightly I strip set the fly with the force similar to that 3rd pull on a lawnmower cord that won't start!

The trout reproduce in rivers and streams at various times of the year depending on the species.  Should we fish during a spawn?  Or, should we stay off the river during the spawning seasons?  I think it is quite important to be knowledgeable about the trout spawn, and to make a reasonable decisions based on that knowledge.

One of the most beautiful aspects of fly fishing is the serene reverberates of the wilderness, the echoes of the river, and the whispering breeze.

I generally fish smaller flies and diminutive nymph patterns, but fly fishing in murky water with lesser transparency allows the angler to fish much larger flies.

In boxing, the "one-two punch" is a nickname for a jab and cross combo designed to fake out your opponent and land a solid shot in the kisser. In streamer fishing, a somewhat similar approach can be effective.

Mcfly was not magically born at a certain time or place...there was not an "Aha!" moment. Instead, the idea seemed to slowly build momentum across years of fly fishing & outdoor adventures and a career spent as a packaging and branding designer.

    About Roger Remaley:

Blessed with a natural curiosity to understand how things really work. I have chosen a career path that is a combination of unique educational, professional and “passionate hobby” pursuits. My life time spent as a branding & packaging designer and as a devoted fishing freak have come together in the form of this new start-up shopmcfly.com.  I love to fish. Whether it’s around the corner or around the globe, I’ve put a line in the water. I am a multi-species angler, and I fish for everything from catfish to trout and everything in between. Currently, I hold 3 world records.
